Chamonix General informationDo you provide any additional local services at the apartment ?Yes. These include a number of “Welcome packs” including food, drink and/or firewood. It’s also possible to receive professionally cooked, packed and frozen soups, main meals and puddings (list available upon request). Babysitting is also possible. More detail available at time of reservation.Trains or automobiles - which method is easiest to reach Chamonix? This really depends on personal choice, phobias, hobbies, and days of travel.Flying, whilst seemingly less time moving between countries, involves much longer check-ins and greater potential for delays. This all counts towards stress, tiredness and length of time to get to your destination. The good news though, is that the transfer between Geneva airport and Chamonix is approximately 1 hour. With flying you are much more likely to get a 'bargain' price, and if you want to arrive/depart on days other than the weekend is probably less hassle than negotiating the train. Driving out from the UK by car is relatively inexpensive if you can share the journey with several friends. Bear in mind that the normal nine hour journey across France may take much longer if you chose to travel on a very busy Saturday or encounter heavy snowfalls. Where can I book flights from the UK?Skyscanner uses cached details so is quicker for an initial overview but needs to get updated rates once you have chosen specific flights to enquire about (so the price can increase depending when the last enquiry was made - your request actually updates the system for others!) It also has a month view of the prices in case you are looking at when the cheapest periods might be (very handy).Geneva is the closest airport to Chamonix (98km). How do I get from the airport to Chamonix? We recommend that you hire a car for the duration of your stay unless you would like to make use of the valley public transport. Having a car during your stay allows you to take advantage of the amazing skiing opportunities in the neighbouring resorts. If you are hiring a car in the winter time then please ensure that you come equipped with snow chains. Car hire pre-booking is highly recommended if not obligatory. You will be given an infa-red remote control enabling you access to the underground car park. Our advice is to hire the car from the Swiss side, a little bit more expensive than the French side but far less hassle and if you hire from the French side there is an additional Swiss road tax charge of 30 euros. This takes approximately 1hr. Try using Holiday Autos for the best searches and prices. Transfer company - If you would like to make use of the valley transport system and need help on your transfer from/to the airport then we recommend www.ski-lifts.com. Where is the nearest train station?Chamonix has its own train line which runs from Saint Gervais les Bains through Chamonix to Martigny in Switzerland, the ride on which is breathtaking. The train stops in Tacconaz (please indicate to conductor when boarding else will not stop !!!) Les Bossons, Les Gaillands, Chamonix Centre, Les Praz, Les Tines, and Argentiere. It also goes onto Vallorcine for skiing in Le Tour. Getting to Chamonix (Train) - There is a railway station (SNIFF) in the centre of Chamonix. It links with St Gervais/Le Fayet and Martigny, which in turn links with the TGV (high speed French rail network). For train booking information visit www.eurostar.com and www.sncf.com/indexe.htm What do I if I want to have a night out in Chamonix without having to drive ?With the Tacconaz train stop only a short walk away it is easy getting in and out of Chamonix. The train journey is less than 10 minutes & drops you off in the centre of the town. Should you miss the last train then there are plenty of taxi firms to get you home for less than 20 euros. Copies of train timetables are available in the apartment. Normally taxis can be found outside the main railway station else call Alps Taxi Rochaix 04 50540048 / Taxi Buton 0450 530805/ Taxi Costa 0450 540430 / Taxi Monard 0608 268476 / Taxi Rousseau 0607 678885Getting to Chamonix (Road and Channel)There is direct access to Chamonix via the Autoroute Blanche motorway (A40), part of the European motorway network. An average journey from Calais to Chamonix is 8 hours. Take the A26 towards Bethune, St Quentin, Reims, Troyes, then the A5, A31 towards Dijon, then A39 towards Dole, Bourge en Bresse, then the A40 (Geneva) but you head towards Chamonix. The A40 comes all the way into town. If you get an early channel crossing (about 9am) - you will easily be here in the evening. You can pay all the tolls by credit card - standard car tolls cost approx 80 euro from/to Calais. From Geneva airport follow the GREEN signs to FRANCE & then pick up the Chamonix Mont Blanc signs once on the Swiss and French motorway system. Getting Around ChamonixBy BusThe buses to the ski lifts are free on production of a lift pass. During the high season the service is very frequent, every 10-15min, but can get very busy.
